I finally registered DevFolio.com and signed up for the hosting service. This makes three domain names under my name. The site will be used to host all PhoenixPo.com development projects and photography albums. I'm debating on whether or not I'll add a home page to the site or redirect people back to PhoenixPo.com... Who knows?
I had to contact support twice so far. One was for aligning the domain name's DNS servers with that of the hosting service's DNS. That was different from what I had to do with the other two domains and hosting services I have, so I didn't know I had to do it with this one. The second support call is still in effect--what happened to ASP .Net on the server? Any file with an ASPX extension, even if it is blank, produces an error. That's not good when I'm trying to set up ConTrak on the server!
For those of you who want to know what services I use, I'll provide an explanation here:
PhoenixPo.com: SoftCom, My Hosting. This is a really old hosting plan I've had since 1997, when I first signed up for the service and purchased the domain. This hosting service is excellent and offers one of the best customer services I have experienced. One time, my support email was answered within eight minutes of sending it! I will not give this service up because I've seen the company grow from a small, poorly-designed site to a really professional hosting business. I get 50MB storage for PhoenixPo.com. I can get more for the $10/month I pay if I choose to upgrade the plan with the new hosting agreement. I do not because I have unlimited bandwidth under my current plan. Therefore, I can host as many web services on PhoenixPo.com without worrying about bandwidth.
SSSAthletics.org: Ready Hosting. For $100 a year, I get 500MB of hosting space. I've no idea about bandwidth, but I know it has not been exceeded. I don't care for this service, as the control panel is fairly limited. However, I have not had a problem with the service, as I don't need to adjust anything in the back end due to the site's code's static nature. Since ASP .Net is not included in this plan, I will cancel the hosting plan when I redo the site in ASP .Net and allow GoDaddy to host it.
DevFolio.com: GoDaddy I can't say too much about this service just yet, but from what I've seen, it seems all right. The price is the cheapest I've found, at $10/month for 2GB of space and 100GB of bandwidth. The control panel is nice, but I like SoftCom's (MyHosting's) panel better because I am more familiar with it. It also seems like the maximum email box size is 3MB, and I don't like having a cap on my email account's size, even if I do download all messages to MS Outlook and erase them from the server. They don't have toll-free help, but I don't care; the wait is only six minutes and I am not charged long distance on my cell phone. I'll just say this last thing: The service had better have the features I need to run ConTrak Systems and a few of my other ASP .Net applications; this is the only reason I will stay with a service at this time. They should, and I should not be too harsh until I've been with the service for at least a few months.
Well, let's see how this stuff goes. Expect to see a lot more about DevFolio later on.
