Job Misery: I don't get it

Please refer to the comic, shown to the right.

As the comic will only be available on the target site for a limited time, I shall also detail what it says: The scene is at a small party at some business.  The boss toasts a glass towards one employee and says "Here's to Pete: May you be as miserable at your new job as you were here."

Why take on a job if you will be miserable with it?  Working takes up eight hours a day as does sleeping.  We are left with the other third of our day eating, commuting, getting ready to work, getting ready to sleep, doing things to live (food shopping, fixing the house, etc.), and spending time with those important to us.  When it comes down to it, we really only have five hours at most during the weekdays to see our loved ones.  Thank goodness for the weekends.

But really; why spend all that time at a job that makes one willingly wait for the clock to hit quitting time?  Sure, the money may be good, but you will spend just as much time at work as you do with the trophies work has wrought.
What ever happened to self-fulfillment, doing what one enjoys, and heartfelt commitment to workplace goals?  Is this society that self-centered where all that holds no weight?  One works because one must.  Why not work also work because one enjoys doing so?  I am privileged enough insomuch as not to have any outstanding bills or debt to pay.  I have seen to minimize monthly expenses.  I live comfortably, but always watch my spending.  My way for paying for something is to pay for it outright.  I would rather pay for a car in full than go into debt.  Houses excluded, I hope I will never owe more than what I can pay off at the end of a month.

True, by doing so I will miss the finer points in life that debt-ridden life affords.  However, I will never be pressed to work long hours or decide on a job simply by the highest offer.  And if a higher offer came, I will never commit the sin of disloyalty by immediately telling my coworkers off and quitting without training a replacement or getting everyone up to speed on my projects so the business will not suffer.  (I prefer working in small businesses, so the impact when one person suddenly quits has an exaggerated impact.)

Getting back to the point at hand, why be miserable at a job?  Can one not find something one enjoys?  Or does it just go to show that people will voluntarily make themselves miserable (and in turn their families for seeing a loved one in misery) for the greedy love of Franklin, Jackson, Lincoln, and Washington?

Society, ruin thyself.  I will enjoy my life surrounded by computers and cameras.  It doesn't pay much on the bank books, but it pays where it counts.
